The Art of Dance goes Far
This year, The Art of Dance Goes Far traveled to four regions of Greece – Athens, Chania, Lefkada, and Leros – bringing dance closer to school communities. A total of 146 children from 14 classes participated under the guidance of five facilitators.
Program Objectives
The program aimed to explore with children what dance is and how we approach it as an art form, an experience, and a social practice. It sought to raise questions about why people dance and how dance can serve as a means of expression, communication, and agency. At the same time, it promoted the development of motor, choreographic, and critical skills through creative practice and observation.
Observations:
All children created their own choreographies, experimenting with their bodies, space, and rhythm, and positively engaging with the group experience.
Children began to see dance in multiple ways: as play, a profession, a mode of expression, and a form of collaboration.
Boys who were initially more hesitant found space to participate, experiment, and express themselves through movement, discovering that dance can be a creative and personal form of expression for everyone, regardless of societal expectations around gender.
The program highlighted the need for more dance initiatives in schools outside of Athens
Outcomes:
Dance functioned as an educational tool for accessible, experiential, and collaborative approaches, enhancing both personal and collective expression and bringing joy and confidence to every child. The activities demonstrated that dance can stimulate imagination, reflection, and communication, while emphasizing the importance of the creative process over the final result.
