Dancing the Difference
This program was designed to use dance as a vibrant and dynamic tool for inclusion and intercultural coexistence. Rather than focusing solely on motor skills, it emphasized the development of choreographic and critical abilities, engaging children in processes of reflection, decision-making, and creation related to key pedagogical themes such as participation, motivation, conflict resolution, and acceptance within the group.
In socially and culturally diverse school environments like those we visited, dance served as a shared space—a non-verbal language accessible to all children, allowing them to express themselves in ways that amplify their voice, without relying on mastery of the dominant language. Through dance, the body became a medium for storytelling, play, and connection, overturning hierarchies and challenging stereotypes.
The educational approach was rooted in experiential learning, with multimodal practices and active child participation. The program included:
Exploration of movement qualities and dynamics
Work with materials and sensory stimuli (such as clay, sensory objects, and improvised instruments)
Improvisation and creation in pairs and groups
Trust exercises and embodied communication
Cultivation of creative thinking through the design of movement "scores" by the children themselves
The results were highly encouraging: increased participation, enhanced motivation, stronger collaboration, greater self-expression, and a sense of emotional and social bonding within the group.
What distinguished this program was its pedagogical emphasis on equity, experimentation, and freedom of expression. Dance was not used merely as an art form but as a tool for social empowerment and pedagogical reflection.
